Many of you know Dr. Sam Morhaim as a respected periodontist at our Great Neck and Mid Island Dental Associates practices. Beyond his friendly demeanor and extensive knowledge in the dental field, Dr. Morhaim has recently added another meaningful title to his name — children’s book author.
A Story Rooted in Real Life
Dr. Morhaim recently authored his first children’s book, Where Are All My Toys? The story follows a five-year-old boy named Jimmy as he discovers what truly matters in life.
Jimmy is celebrating his fifth birthday, surrounded by family and excited about his new toys. However, his world suddenly changes when his toys — and then his father — are taken away due to an immigration incident. Through this emotional journey, Jimmy learns that the most important things in life are not material possessions, but love and family.
This powerful story is inspired by a true event from Dr. Morhaim’s own family history. When his older brother was five years old, he experienced a similar situation involving immigration at a U.S. airport.
“Nobody addressed the issues surrounding my brother’s incident,” shared Dr. Morhaim. “He eventually began hiding his own toys and other children’s toys because he thought he was helping them.”
Starting an Important Conversation
For Dr. Morhaim’s family — and for many families living in the United States — immigration-related experiences can be deeply traumatic, yet they often go undiscussed. Dr. Morhaim wrote this story to open up meaningful conversations in a way that is gentle, approachable, and suitable for children.
“I wanted this story to feel real, but not overwhelming,” he explained. “Writing from a child’s perspective allows kids to understand that their feelings are valid and that they are not alone.”
A Lifelong Passion for Writing
Writing has always been a passion for Dr. Morhaim. During his high school years, he contributed to blogs, editorial boards, and the school newspaper — laying the foundation for storytelling that would later find its way into children’s literature.
“My favorite part of the book is when Jimmy realizes he has everything he could have wanted for his birthday,” said Dr. Morhaim. “But once his father is taken away, his toys suddenly don’t matter anymore.”
A Message That Resonates
At its heart, Where Are All My Toys? is a story about family, gratitude, and perspective. Dr. Morhaim hopes readers walk away with a deeper appreciation for the people and values that truly matter.
“Until you lose something truly important, you don’t fully appreciate what you have,” he reflected. “When your ideals are threatened, you suddenly understand what’s really at stake.”
